Asian Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia, which is administered by a board certified Anesthesiologist. Most of the incisions are hidden inside the nose. Often there is the need for an external, small hidden incision in the skin between the nostrils. Asian Rhinoplasty may involve:
- Bridge Refinement: Adjusting the height or width of the nasal bridge.
- Tip Contouring: Reshaping the nasal tip to enhance symmetry and proportion.
- Nostril Adjustment: Refining the size or shape of the nostrils to create balance.

After surgery is complete, an external splint is used to protect the surgical results. Both the splint and sutures (if external) are removed 5-7 days following rhinoplasty surgery. There is some swelling and bruising following surgery, but these are minimal.
Recovery From Nose Surgery
Recovering from rhinoplasty is an important part of the entire plastic surgery procedure. It’s normal to experience swelling, bruising and discomfort for up to two weeks after surgery. In most cases, rhinoplasty patients can return to work within one week following their rhinoplasty procedure; however, it is important to follow your surgeon’s specific post-operative instructions carefully in order to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.
NJ ENT will schedule follow-up appointments for the day after surgery, followed by weekly visits for the first few weeks. Then visits are regularly scheduled at 3-month intervals for one year to check on the healing process.

It is best to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, bending over, wearing glasses that rest on your nose, and other activities outlined by your surgeon.
Both the splint and sutures (if external) are removed after 5-7 days. There is some swelling and bruising following surgery, but these are minimal. Much of the swelling comes down within a few weeks. The nose will continue to improve every day. The final results of the rhinoplasty procedure are clear early, but might take over a year to complete all reduction in swelling.
Dr. Undavia has been performing in-office rhinoplasties with increasing frequency. Most decisions to perform in-office surgery revolve around the patient’s goals for surgery, their tolerance for some discomfort (not pain, but pressure and sound of instruments), and patient safety. Most patients are prescribed an anxiolytic-like Xanax pre-operatively. This combined with local anesthesia provides excellent anesthesia for our patients. In general, in patients with more soft tissue work (as opposed to bony work), office-based rhinoplasty works quite well.
