How to Hydrate, Protect, and Tape in the First Few Weeks Post Op

Most post-op swelling is fluid, manage the fluid, speed the recovery. In this episode, Dr. Undavia walks you through a simple routine: frequent saline rinses made the right way, soothing between rinses with gel or light ointment, and smart nighttime taping after rhinoplasty to guide tissues and calm swelling. Clear, practical steps you can start day one to feel better, breathe easier, and get to your “final” look faster.

What you’ll learn:

  • How often to rinse and why the saline packet and distilled/boiled water matter
  • The role of saline gel or light ointment for soothing and moisture between rinses
  • How nighttime taping can speed the swelling curve and reduce touch-ups

Recovering from nasal surgery can be uncomfortable, but a few simple habits can make a big difference in how quickly and smoothly you heal. While it’s important to follow your surgeon’s specific instructions, several universal tips can help ease congestion, reduce swelling, and keep you feeling more comfortable throughout recovery.

1. Stay Consistent with Nasal Rinses

After nasal surgery, your nose reacts much like it does during a cold, it produces a lot of mucus, and that buildup can lead to congestion and discomfort. Using saline rinses regularly helps keep your nasal passages clear and promotes faster healing.

Make sure to use both the distilled or boiled water and the provided salt packets. Skipping the salt can actually make congestion worse because plain water isn’t the right concentration for your nasal tissues. Patients who rinse two to three times a day tend to recover well, but those who use sinus rinses more frequently—five or six times daily—often see the best results. Their nasal passages stay clear, healing progresses smoothly, and post-op visits tend to be much easier.

2. Keep the Inside of Your Nose Moisturized

In between rinses, applying a saline gel or a small amount of petroleum jelly can help soothe dryness and reduce crusting. The goal is to keep the inside of your nose moist so it can heal efficiently. This step is especially useful during the first week or two, when dryness can cause irritation or discomfort. A hydrated nose not only feels better but also heals faster.

3. Use Nasal Taping to Reduce Swelling

For rhinoplasty patients in particular, nasal taping can significantly speed up recovery. After the cast is removed, swelling, especially at the tip and sides of the nose, can make the shape appear wider than the final result. Over the next several months, that swelling gradually subsides, but consistent nighttime taping can accelerate the process.

Patients who tape their noses nightly often see a noticeable difference within just a few weeks, appearing several months ahead of schedule in terms of swelling reduction. It also minimizes the need for steroid injections and helps maintain a smooth nasal contour. As long as your skin tolerates it, taping can be done nightly, or even during the day if you’re home recovering.

Recovering from nasal surgery takes time and patience, but staying hydrated, keeping your nasal passages moist, and using taping techniques as directed can make that journey much smoother. Always check with your surgeon before trying anything new, but with consistency and care, you can expect to breathe and feel better sooner.
