Voice Disorders

Voice disorders can affect different parts of the vocal process, from neurological problems to the vocal cords themselves. The treatment process relies on the diagnoses, cause, and personal health. Here are a few common voice disorders and their causes. This list is not complete. A professional is needed to diagnose and treat voice disorders.

  • Dysphonia: This is a general term used to describe difficulties in producing vocal sounds. This can make the voice sound raspy, hoarse, breathy, or strained.
  • Spasmodic Dysphonia: This neurological disorder causes involuntary spasms or contractions of the muscles in the larynx, creating a strained or strangled-sounding voice.
  • Vocal Cord Nodules/Polyps: These are non-cancerous growths on the vocal cords, usually caused by vocal abuse or misuse.
  • Laryngitis: The larynx (or voice box) is inflamed. Some causes are infections, overuse of the voice, and exposure to irritants. You can sound hoarse or like you are losing your voice.
  • Vocal Cord Paralysis/Paresis: One or both vocal cords are unable to move or can only partially move due to nerve damage. This can cause difficulties in speaking and swallowing.
  • Reinke’s Edema: The vocal cords swell due to chronic smoking or exposure to other irritants, resulting in a deep, hoarse voice.
  • Muscle Tension Dysphonia: This is excessive tension in the muscles around the voice box, usually due to stress, vocal abuse, or improper vocal technique. This causes vocal fatigue and discomfort.

Reviews of Our ENT Services

After seeing my fifth ENT, Dr. Undavia is the first Doctor who actually listened to me. I had two CT scans that he actually took the time to look at as well as the written reports. He has a great bedside manner and I finally felt that I found the right doctor. I actually drove an hour and a half for my appointment yesterday, and it was well worth it. Today I received the text message first thing in the morning about setting up my surgery. I was texting with Regina who is also amazing and answered any question that I had. I was able to set up my surgery date with ease. Even down to the receptionist, who was super bubbly, and just had a great personality. The building an office itself was just good. Clean and friendly and welcoming. I trust that Dr. Undavia won’t disappoint when I have my surgery in December. Great experience!

I traveled from Toms River, NJ to Marlton based on the excellent reviews for Dr. Reddy. Location, wait time, the office, his assistant and his attention to my issues exceeded my expectations. I didn’t feel rushed and he thoroughly explained everything regarding treatment options. I highly recommend him for all your ENT needs.

Dr Gregory Smith is a great doctor. He performed surgery on me 18 months ago and this follow up showed great results. I recommend him to anyone needed ENT help.

I couldn’t be more thrilled with Dr. Undavia. When I first came to the office I had ruptured my ear drum. I was under another Doctor’s care and after 1 month I was no better and in so much pain. Dr. Undavia was recommended by a friend. After just 2 weeks my condition improved tremendously. I would highly recommend Dr. Undavia to anyone looking for an ENT. He is caring and kind and so is his nurse. Thank you Dr. Undavia
